What can we do as consumers moving forward?

SUPPORT WOC OWNED BEAUTY BRANDS! There are so many indie cosmetics companies that have been promoting diversity in their foundation shade ranges. These companies are dedicated to inclusivity in their products, catering to the lightest and darkest of shades. Fenty Beauty is a great example of this. From its very inception, Rihanna was determined to provide a line of foundation shades that suited every beautiful skin tone. Another example is Iman Cosmetics, owned by THE Iman, a model of Somali descent. Their mission is to “offer the skincare needs in African-American and multi-cultural makeup that other companies were lacking” [9]. However, there has been a larger demand for more accessible beauty products with a wide selection of shades. Uoma Beauty provides similar products at much lower prices. Sharon Chuter, the founder of Uoma Beauty, has been quoted to say, “The world is beautiful because we are all different and colorful in our unique way and this is why Uoma beauty exists. To celebrate people from all ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation, sizes and of all ages together in a colorful celebration and co-existence” [10].

With the increasing amount of pressure that is being put on companies to diversify their shade ranges, it is inexcusable when well-known beauty brands release cosmetics that do not include a shade suitable for every skin tone. To counter this, instead of supporting companies that have resisted this positive change by limiting foundation shades, direct your attention at companies that have embraced every single skin tone. Everyone deserves to feel represented, especially when it comes to beauty.
